Before you Buy: Only
buy from breeders who have had their dogs hip scored for hip displasia and the
sire tested for haemophilia.
Hip Displasia: Hip
Displasia is caused by the hip joint not forming properly. Although not
exclusively hereditary both parents should have their hips x rayed and have a
score ideally of less than 5 each side. The lower the number the better the
score. Young puppies up to the age of 6 months should not be over exercised, a
10 minute romp in the garden is much better than a ˝ hour walk round the roads.
Exercise and road work should be built up gradually for puppies over 6 months.
Puppies should not be allowed to run up and down stairs, jump on or off
furniture or into cars. Care should be taken to ensure a balance diet suitable
for the puppy’s age and that the puppy is not allowed to become overweight.
Distemper:
Inoculation against Distemper is important for puppies as it can be hard to
treat and can cause long term health problems including seizures.
Parvovirus:
Parvovirus is the most common viral infection in dogs with puppies being more at
risk than adults. Vaccination can be difficult and puppies should be vaccinated
every three to four weeks up to 16 or 20 weeks of age. Although successful
vaccination may give life long immunity, it is generally advised to continue
vaccinating annually.
Kennel Cough:
Kennel Cough is most often caused by the Bordetella Bronchiseptica bacteria and
can be highly infectious. Most kennels require dogs to be vaccinated against
kennel cough at least a week before they stay and any dog which will be mixing
with large dogs e.g. at dog training classes should also be vaccinated.
Depending on the vaccine, the dog will ether be covered for 6 months or a year -
please check with your vet. |
